Preparing Your Home for Spine Surgery Recovery

FIG. · A RECOVERY-READY HOME
The single best thing you can do for a smooth recovery happens before you ever leave for the hospital: preparing your home. A few thoughtful adjustments mean you'll spend your first weeks healing comfortably instead of improvising around obstacles while you're sore and moving slowly.
Set Up a Recovery Zone
Choose one room — ideally on the ground floor — as your base. Keep everything you'll reach for within arm's length so you're not bending, twisting, or stretching during the most delicate phase of healing.
- A firm chair with armrests, which makes standing up far easier than a deep, low sofa.
- Phone, charger, water, and medications on a side table you can reach without leaning.
- A few days of easy, fiber-rich meals prepped and ready to go.
Make Daily Tasks Reachable
- Move everyday items to waist height to avoid bending down and reaching overhead.
- Keep a grabber tool handy for anything that drops to the floor.
- Lay out loose, easy clothing and slip-on shoes in advance.
Reduce Fall Risk
- Clear walking paths of cords, clutter, and loose rugs.
- Add night lights between your recovery zone and the bathroom.
- Install grab bars in the shower if your surgeon recommends them.
Recovery is so much easier when your home works with you, not against you. Set it up once, and your future self will thank you every single day.
